Owen Joshua Lewsey MBE (born November 30, 1976 in Bromley ) is a former English rugby union player who was used in the positions of goalkeeper and outside three quarters . He was active for the England national team and the London Wasps .
Career
Although Lewsey was born and raised in England, he could have played for the Welsh national team as his parents have Welsh ancestors. In the end, however, he decided on the English team. He joined the London Wasps at the age of 18, where he still plays today.
He made his first international match in 1998 when England met Australia . In 2001 he graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and served two years as an officer in the military before devoting himself to professional rugby.
At the Six Nations 2003 he played again for England due to an injury to Jason Robinson , where he scored two attempts in the game against Italy . In the next game against Scotland he succeeded in another attempt. At the end of the tournament he and the team celebrated winning the Grand Slam . He then took part in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in rugby 7 .
In the run-up to the 2003 World Cup , he was part of the regular formation in the friendly against New Zealand and Australia. He was now used as the goalkeeper, as Jason Robinson had switched to the outside three-quarter position. Lewsey played a major role at the World Cup and scored five attempts against Uruguay . By winning the title, he celebrated the greatest success of his career.
In the 2004 Six Nations Championship , he was elected to player of the day at the game against Scotland. During the tournament he made two attempts, one against Italy and one against the Scots. The following year he was part of a tour of the British and Irish Lions for the first time , where he got two attempts here, but they did not find their way into his statistics because they were achieved in a test match against a regional selection.
In 2006 he got a break from coach Brian Ashton , while the national team played a few international matches in the summer. Lewsey used the time to go climbing in the Himalayas . However, he did not inform his homeland club from London, as they would hardly have allowed his expedition.
At the 2007 World Championships Lewsey was again part of the English squad and played all games until an injury in the semifinals against France . Against the French, he laid the cornerstone for the English to reach the finals early with his attempt in the second minute. In 2008 he was under the new coach Martin Johnson to the extended circle of the national team, but came to no further use. At the end of the year he announced his retirement from international rugby. At the end of the 2008/09 season he also stopped playing club rugby and will devote himself to mountaineering before joining PricewaterhouseCoopers as a consultant.
