At the age of 14, Bell performed as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Riccardo Muti . He studied violin at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and graduated from Bloomington High School North in 1984. In 1989, Bell received an artist diploma as a violinist from Indiana University .
Since his Carnegie Hall debut in 1985, he has performed with almost all the major orchestras and conductors of our time worldwide. In addition to the standard classical repertoire, he has performed numerous modern and contemporary works, including several composed especially for him.
Joshua Bell gained particular fame through the recording of the original music by John Corigliano for the Oscar-winning soundtrack of the film The Red Violin in 1998 and the music for the film The Scent of Lavender in 2004.
Bell's violin is the so-called Gibson ex Huberman , built by Antonio Stradivari in 1713 , known for its theft from the Carnegie Hall artist's wardrobe of the then owner and violinist Bronisław Huberman in 1936. The thief, a traveling and commissioned musician, stayed until his death owned by the Stradivarius and only admitted the theft to his wife on her deathbed in 1985. In October 2019, Joshua Bell married the soprano Larisa Martinez in Mount Kisco, New York after a seven-year partnership. He has a son from a previous relationship.
Pearls Before Breakfast (Washington Post Experiment)
On January 12, 2007, Joshua Bell was the protagonist of an experiment by the Washington Post : In street clothes, with a baseball cap on his head and his Stradivarius violin in hand, he stood incognito in the L'Enfant Plaza subway station in Washington, DC and played pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach , Franz Schubert and other composers of classical music for 43 minutes . The experiment was recorded with a hidden camera and gave the following result: of 1,097 people who passed him, only 7 stopped to listen to him, and only one recognized him. Some have thrown money in the open violin case, a total of $ 32.17 (plus another $ 20 from the one person who recognized him - these are to be assessed separately). The journalist Gene Weingarten received the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing for his article Pearls Before Breakfast , in which he described and commented on this experiment .
Awards
In 1991 Bell received the Distinguished Alumni Service Award from the Jacobs School of Music, and in 2003 the Indiana Governor's Arts Award . On April 10, 2007, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize at Lincoln Center in New York City . The award is given every few years to classical instrumentalists for outstanding performance. On May 27, 2019, Bell will receive the Glashütte Original MusikFestspielPrize, endowed with 25,000 euros , for its commitment to children's and youth education.
