Journal of Late Antiquity

The Journal of Late Antiquity (abbreviated JLA ) is an ancient scholarly journal that deals with late antiquity . It appears every six months in March and October.

The first issue appeared in the spring of 2008. After the French magazine Antiquité tardive , which has been published since 1993, the Journal of Late Antiquity was the second specialist magazine (and the first in English) to explicitly specialize in late antiquity. The founding of the new journal took into account the fact that late antiquity, especially towards the end of the 20th century, increasingly moved into the focus of research and has meanwhile advanced to an independent research area, especially in the Anglo-Saxon region. The idea arose in 1995 at the symposium Shifting Frontiers in Late Antiquity at the University of Kansas , organized by the Society for Late Antiquity , but it did not take shape until 2003 at a conference at the University of California, Santa Barbara . Ralph W. Mathisen was commissioned to look for publishers for the new journal. In 2005, the Johns Hopkins University Press was officially accepted as a publisher. After a long period of preparation, the first volume was published in 2008.

The journal sees itself as interdisciplinary and aims to collect articles from all areas of antiquity and mediaeval studies that deal with late antiquity. This is defined here very broadly as the period from the late classical to the Carolingian epoch (approx. 250–800 AD) in the Western European, Eastern Roman or Byzantine , Sassanid and early Islamic areas. The magazine should not only offer longer articles, but also be open to smaller notes; in addition, each issue includes a review section where the latest research literature is reviewed by experts. The Journal of Late Antiquity is published in the United States, but has a very international focus and is open to scholars from all countries; However, the language of publication is English.

Andrew Cain is the editor and Scott Bradbury, Judith Evans-Grubbs, Danuta Shanzer and Dennis Trout are co-editors . The editors of the review section are Sabine Hübner , Jason Moralee and Kristina Sessa. Internationally recognized researchers such as Peter Brown , Michael Kulikowski, AnneMarie Luijendijk, Jitse HF Dijkstra and Beatrice Caseau sit on the scientific advisory board .
