Joyce Anne Anelay, Baroness Anelay of St Johns DBE PC (born July 17, 1947 ) is a British politician ( Conservative Party ). From August 6, 2014 until her resignation on October 27, 2017, she was State Secretary at the UK Foreign Office .

life and career

She was born Joyce Anne Clarke on July 17, 1947 and attended Enfield County School and Bristol University . From 1969 to 1974 she worked as a teacher. She later worked as a volunteer advisor at the Citizens' Advice Bureau and was Justice of the Peace in Surrey from 1985 to 1997 and a member of the Social Security Tribunals from 1983 to 1996.

Anelay was a member of the Social Security Advisory Committee for Great Britain and Northern Ireland from 1989 to 1996 . From 1991 to 1994 she was a member of the Women's National Commission and from 1993 to 1996 the Child Support Appeal Tribunal. She was President of the World Travel Market from 2003 to 2008.

In the following years she held several higher party offices in the Conservative Party. From 1987 to 1990 she was chair of the South East Area Conservative Women's Committee. From 1987 to 1997 she was a member of the Conservative Party National Union Executive Committee , and from 1990 to 1993 she was Deputy Chairwoman of the SE Area Executive Committee. In 1993 she took over the chairmanship of the Women's National Committee; she held this office until 1996. From 1996 to 1997 she served as Vice President of the Conservative National Union .

Membership in the House of Lords

Anelay was named a Life Peeress as Baroness Anelay of St Johns , of St Johns in the County of Surrey on October 14, 1996 . Their official introduction to the House of Lords took place on November 5, 1996 with the assistance of Baroness Seccombe and Baroness Miller of Hendon . Anelay gave her inaugural address on November 13, 1996.

She lists social security and internal affairs as topics of political interest on the House of Lords website.

From 1997 to 1998 she was the opposition whip . She was opposition spokeswoman for several areas: from 1997 to 1998 for agricultural affairs, 1997 to 1998 for domestic policy, 1997 to 1999 for social security, 1998 to 2002 for culture, media and sport, 2002 to 2007 again for domestic policy and 2003 to 2004 for legal affairs .

Lady Anelay was chief whip of the opposition in the House of Lords from 2007 until the Conservatives won the election in 2010. Since 2008 she has also been Deputy Speaker of the House and Deputy Chair of Committees . Since May 2010 she has been chief whip of the government faction, formally she holds the office of Captain of the Honorable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms .

She is regularly present on meeting days.

Honors

Anelay was made Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1990 and Dame Commander in 1995 .

Anelay is married to Richard Anelay since 1970, a leading barrister for family and criminal law, the President of the 1 King's Bench Walk Chambers and Deputy High Court Judge (also briefly: Supreme Court judge ).
