Jozef Machálek
Jozef Machálek (born August 22, 1948 ) is a former Swedish - Slovak athlete who competed in medium and long distance runs . He was three times Czechoslovak runner-up.
Running career
Machálek initially competed for the ZVL Skalica and was trained by Rudolf Roučka. He first drew attention to himself in February 1973 when, at the age of 24, at the Czechoslovak athletics championships held in Jablonec nad Nisou , he finished second in the 1,500 meter run in 3: 57.7 minutes - just barely beaten by Ivan Kováč .
As a result, he increasingly concentrated on the long haul and was soon able to celebrate successes. In August 1977 he came second in the marathon from Banská Bystrica to Brezno , which was classified as a national championship. In October 1978 he was able to repeat this result in Košice - although he only crossed the finish line in seventh place, he was the second best Czechoslovak athlete. In both years he was defeated by Josef Jánský . Machálek also won several medals at the athletics championships in the Slovak part of the country:
- 1976 in Košice : Silver over 3000 m (8: 26.8 min)
- 1977 in Banská Bystrica : silver over 10,000 m (29: 59.8 min) / bronze over 5000 m (14: 30.0 min)
- 1978 in Bratislava : Gold over 10,000 m (29: 40.4 min)
Apart from professional sports, Machálek emerged victorious from numerous popular races : In March 1975 he won the second edition of the “Great Moravian Run” in Mikulčice over nine kilometers . In 1976 he defended this title over ten kilometers (30:32 min) and also won the 10,000 meter run in Komárno . In 1977 the third victory in Mikulčice followed over ten kilometers (29:44 min) and in 1978 first places in Uherské Hradiště and Bruntál over the same distance . In 1979 Machálek won both the marathon in Otrokovice (2:17:10 h) and the 32nd edition of the Devín - Bratislava run, which is about twelve kilometers long. He secured his fourth and fifth triumphs in Mikulčice over ten kilometers in 1981 and 1982 (30:08 min).
In 1983 Jozef Machálek emigrated to Sweden . He found work as a precision mechanic in Hässelby-Vällingby and joined Fredrikshofs IF; the following year he moved to Hässelby SK. Now living on the western side of the Iron Curtain , he was no longer subject to the travel restrictions of communist Czechoslovakia and was able to compete with opponents at international running events. Among other things, he took part in the renowned marathons in London , Berlin , Boston and New York City and won 1985 in Oslo and 1986 in Bremen . He also won second place in the half marathon in July 1987 at the Swedish Athletics Championships in Västervik (1:06:46 h).
