Juan Santiago Garrido

Juan Santiago Garrido Vargas (born May 9, 1902 in Valparaíso , † January 23, 1994 in Mexico City ) was a Chilean musicologist and composer.

The brother of the composer Pablo Garrido Vargas had piano lessons from his mother as a child. At the age of twelve he composed his first work, the song Madre, Bendita Palabra . Since 1932 he lived in Mexico.

Here he directed the radio program La Hora del Aficionado on XEW-AM for thirty-six years . From 1959 to 1972 he headed the Coro Infantil de Televicentro . For eighteen years he published the column Buenos Días Mis Amigos in the magazine Novedades . From 1980 to 1983 he produced the program Historia Musical de México for the Instituto Mexicano de la Radio .

His book Historia de la Música Popular en México (1896–1973) was published by Editorial Extemporáneos. Garrido composed numerous songs, including Dame un beso , Lágrimas , Pelea de gallos en la Feria de San Marcos , Noche de Luna en Xalapa , El enamorado , Ay Caramba , Hasta el cepillo , Un suspiro , Canitas , El charro and others. Compositions such as La pelea de gallos en la Feria de San Marcos and Noche de Luna en Jalapa had great success . Some works were also created in collaboration with other musicians such as Ernesto Cortázar ( El corrido villista ), José Antonio Zorrilla ( Monís ) and Manuel Muñoz Farrus .
