Julian Barry

Julian Barry (born December 24, 1930 in Riverdale , New York ) is an American writer and screenwriter who became internationally known for his work for films such as Lenny or People on the River .

life and career

Julian Barry, born in Riverdale, New York in 1930, played the saxophone for a high school band in his youth and traveled to jazz clubs in New York City . After high school, Barry attended Syracuse University in New York, where he studied drama. During the Korean War he was drafted into the army and served until 1953. After his time in the army, he first worked as an actor and stage manager in Broadway productions Active screenwriter. In 1966 he wrote an episode for the popular US agent series Cobra, Take Over .

Barry was originally hired by Columbia Pictures in 1969 to write a screenplay for Lenny as a romantic love story. The play Lenny , written by Barry and based on a biography of Lenny Bruce , was first a dramatic play and performed 453 times between May 1971 and June 1972, with actor Cliff Gorman receiving a Tony Award in 1972 for the title role . In 1974 director Bob Fosse adapted the play for the cinema. Julian Barry wrote the script for Lenny and actor Dustin Hoffman played the role of Lenny on screen. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards in 1975 , including Julian Barry a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. In 1978 he worked in the background on the script for Irvin Kershner's film The Eyes of Laura Mars , in which his wife Laura Ziskin was involved as a producer. In 1984 he wrote the screenplay for director Mark Rydell's film People on the River , a drama starring Mel Gibson and Sissy Spacek . His last screenplay to date for Pablo Ferro's comedy Me, Myself and I with JoBeth Williams and George Segal was written in 1992 .

In 1978 he married the film producer Laura Ziskin and moved with her to Connecticut to raise his three children from his previous marriage to Sheila Ann Shulman. They have a child together. The marriage later ended in divorce.
