Juliane von Nassau-Dillenburg, Countess of Hesse-Kassel

Juliane von Nassau-Dillenburg (born September 3, 1587 in Dillenburg , † February 15, 1643 in Rotenburg an der Fulda ) was the fifth child and second daughter of Count Johann von Nassau-Dillenburg (1561-1623), who died in 1606 after the Distribution of his father's inheritance when Johann I. Graf zu Nassau-Siegen and his wife Magdalene von Waldeck (1558–1599).

Life

Juliane became the second wife of Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel (1572–1632) on May 22, 1603 and gave birth to seven sons and seven daughters until 1628. In order to ensure their proper care, Juliane purposefully carried out the transfer of income and property rights to her children and finally got the consent from Moritz that her descendants would receive a quarter of the Landgraviate of Hesse - the so-called Rotenburger Quart - although these areas were still under Kasselers Suzerainty should remain. Thus, with Julian's sons Hermann and Friedrich , the landgrave branch lines " Hessen-Rotenburg " and " Hessen-Eschwege " and then in 1649 with their son Ernst the line " Hessen-Rheinfels (younger line) " emerged. Although Ernst inherited Eschwege and then Rotenburg as early as 1655 or 1658 after the death of his childless brothers , thereby uniting all parts of the Rotenburger Quart in one hand, due to inheritance, amalgamations and divisions, there were several times over the following 250 years new or newly named branch lines of partially independent counties such as "Hessen-Rheinfels-Rotenburg", "Hessen-Eschwege-Wanfried" and "Hessen-Rotenburg-Eschwege".

Landgrave Moritz abdicated in 1627 under pressure from the Hessian estates and retired to Eschwege , where he died in 1632. His son from his first marriage, Wilhelm V, took over the government in Hessen-Kassel . Juliane and her children moved into Rotenburg Castle in Rotenburg an der Fulda in 1629 , where she died in 1643.
