Julie Ivalo Broberg Berthelsen , also known only by the short name Julie (born June 7, 1979 in Aarhus , Denmark ) is a Greenlandic singer , actress and television presenter .

life and career

family

Julie Berthelsen was born in Denmark to Helene Broberg from Greenland and a Dane. When she was nine years old, her mother married the musician and politician Per Berthelsen , whereupon she took his surname. Although she was born in Denmark, Julie grew up in Greenland's capital Nuuk . Julie was in a relationship with the handball player and nephew of Prime Minister Jonathan Motzfeldt , Hans Peter Motzfeldt-Kyed , for five years . She has been with handball player Minik Dahl Høegh since 2009 , with whom she has a son Casper Nanoq, born in January 2012, and a daughter Sia, born in October 2015. After the engagement in 2017, both have been married since July 5, 2019.

Career

Julie Berthelsen had already started singing background vocals for her stepfather for the band Sumé at the age of 15 . She was also active in the choir and sang in the band Nuna ( Land ). At 19, she moved back to Aarhus to study medicine. However, she only became known in 2002 through the Danish version of the TV show Popstars . Although she only finished second this season, she became better known and had more success than any other participant. The influence of the time at Sumé can still be heard in her own works. In 2010 she released an album with re-recordings of songs by Sumé. In 2003 she was awarded the Greenlandic Culture Prize. In 2004 Julie Berthelsen won the Danish Music Awards in the categories of best singer, best newcomer and best pop album.

Julie Berthelsen has appeared on numerous television shows in Denmark. Her music has been used several times for the television series 2900 Happiness .

In addition, she had important live performances, e.g. B. 2004 at Christiansborg Palace on the occasion of the wedding of the Danish Crown Prince Frederik to Mary Donaldson and in 2008 at the so-called White concert , which was given on the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' White Album . She was also the presenter of the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2010 , she reports the annual Christmas greetings from Greenland, was active as an actress in Greenland's first film and published a book on healthy eating. She also held out the prospect of becoming politically active, as her father did.

At the end of January 2019 it was announced that Julie and Nina Kreutzmann Jørgensen would take part in the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2019 with her English-Greenland song League of Light . Both reached second place behind Leonora , who was finally allowed to represent Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 .
