Julius Leopold Korngold (together with his son Erich Wolfgang Korngold also under the pseudonym Paul Schott ; born December 24, 1860 in Brno , Austrian Empire ; died September 25, 1945 in Los Angeles ) was an Austrian music critic, pianist and lawyer.

Life

Julius Korngold was born as the elder son of a Jewish businessman (the younger was Eduard Korngold , theater actor and writer, 1863-1939). From 1881 to 1887 he studied law at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in law (Dr. jur.). He also studied music theory and harmony at the Conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde under Franz Krenn and Anton Bruckner .

After returning to Brno, Korngold completed his legal internship. At the same time he worked as a music critic for the daily messenger in Brno. His marriage to Josefine Witrofski resulted in two sons, the musician Hans Robert Korngold (1892–1965) and the pianist, composer and conductor Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897–1957). While he largely ignored the older son, Julius Korngold promoted the high musical talent of his younger son and published joint works under the pseudonym Paul Schott .

In 1901 the family settled in Vienna again. In 1902 he was appointed to the Neue Freie Presse on Johannes Brahms ' recommendation, to which he first belonged as editor of the feature pages, and from 1904 to 1934 as music consultant.

After Austria was annexed to the German Reich, the family fled to the USA, where his younger son had emigrated in 1936.

In 1955, Korngoldgasse in Vienna- Penzing (14th district) was named after him.
