Julius Roeting , painting by Carl Friedrich Lessing

Julius Amatus Roeting (born September 13, 1822 in Dresden ; † May 21, 1896 in Düsseldorf ) was a German history and portrait painter .

Life

Even as a child, Roeting showed great talent for drawing and at the age of twelve helped to depict a lion for a theater curtain. He studied at the Dresden Art Academy with Eduard Bendemann and at the end of the 1850s he moved to Düsseldorf, where he continued his education. After Theodor Hildebrandt's retirement, he took over the technical painting class at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . He led the figurative painting class. He himself made some large historical pictures, for example in 1851 a "Columbus in front of the Collegium in Salamanca" or in 1866 of the "Entombment of Christ". In 1854 Roeting painted the portrait of Peter de Greiff in Krefeld, where he met his future wife Maria Werner . On September 1, 1854, the wedding took place in silence, as de Greiff had suffered a stroke the day before. In 1855 Roeting stayed for a short time with the painter Ludwig Knaus in Paris, whose portrait he painted there. In the same year King Maximilian II Joseph of Bavaria awarded him the Knight's Cross 2nd Class of the Order of Saint Michael . In 1856 he went to London to paint a portrait of Lord Fartly. He was supposed to paint the Lord Chancellor too, but was too homesick and left. He soon switched entirely to portraiture and created a large number of portraits. His portrait of Ernst Moritz Arndt has been reproduced many times.

In 1866 Roeting was awarded the great gold medal for art. In 1868 he was appointed professor as the successor to the late Karl Ferdinand Sohn .

Roeting died of pneumonia on May 21 or 22, 1896 after being sick for four days . At this point in time there were five started, almost finished portraits in his studio, which was in his house at Klosterstrasse 25.

Roeting was a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts and the Vienna Art Academy as well as the Düsseldorf artists' association Malkasten . In Dresden he was a member of the Masonic lodge Zum golden Apfel . He was the father-in-law of the Düsseldorf painter Max Volkhart and the grandfather of the sculptor and wax boss Claire Volkhart and the designer and racing driver Kurt C. Volkhart . Son Ernst Roeting became an architect and also worked as a sculptor.

Of his history pictures, which are characterized by strong and saturated coloring and simple, broad treatment, the following are to be emphasized:

  • Columbus before the spiritual council in Salamanca (1851, Dresdener Galerie)
  • Christ on the cross (altarpiece for the church in Lenten in Courland)
  • Entombment of Christ (1866, Museum Krefeld)

Roeting achieved more important things in portraits, especially in male ones, which have found general recognition for their surprising resemblance, lifelike conception and brilliant color. Among the best of his many portraits are those of Emanuel Leutze (1847), Wilhelm von Schadow and Carl Friedrich Lessing (1852, Alte Kunsthalle zu Düsseldorf) and Ernst Moritz Arndt (1859).
