Julius de Praetere

Julius de Praetere (also Jules de Prater ) (born January 21, 1879 in Ledeberg , Ghent , † May 3, 1947 in Basel ) was a Belgian painter, graphic artist, university professor and publisher in the field of applied arts and textile design.

De Praetere was born the son of an auctioneer at the fish market. He studied in Ghent and was a student of Henry van de Velde . He left Belgium disappointed.

From 1902 to 1905 he taught at the Werkkunstschule in Krefeld . In 1906 the Belgian was appointed director of the Zurich School of Applied Arts and the associated museum. In the Art Nouveau era, he led the reform of the schools in Basel and Zurich. In 1907 he was also a founding member of the Deutscher Werkbund .
