The Junius Verlag was founded in 1979 by the Group of International Marxists in Hamburg founded and initially published texts on the history of the European labor movement . The first book published by Junius Verlag was a homage to Leon Trotsky , with further focuses on the topics of ecology and the Third World .

The introductory series started by SOAK Verlag in Hanover and founded in 1977 by Detlef Horster has been published by Junius since 1984 . In addition to classics of the labor movement, the series was initially devoted to theorists of Western Marxism , the Frankfurt School and its wider environment. In the 1980s and early 1990s she contributed to the popularization of post-structuralism in Germany.

Meanwhile, the series comprising introducing 180 work representations of Adorno to Slavoj Žižek and issues volumes of the analytical philosophy to scientific theory . The new focus in the fields of image and media studies, the history of science and overarching cultural studies complements the philosophical and social science program. With the yearbook Architektur in Hamburg , the first architecture book was published by Junius in 1989. In addition to the chambers of architects in Hamburg, Lower Saxony and Hesse, the Federal Ministry for Transport , Building and Housing, the Federal Chamber of Engineers and the German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt have since joined as cooperation partners. The architecture program focuses on office and building monographs as well as catalogs and yearbooks, but also practical books for architects on topics such as marketing and start-ups .

The Hamburg program has been a new focus of the publishing house since 2007. Beginning with contemporary photo books about the city, it now encompasses a wide range of regional topics from city guides to children's and cookbooks to historical illustrated books.
