Junkers Ju 85

The Junkers Ju 85 project is the design of a 2-engine high-speed bomber based on the Junkers Ju 88 .

development

In 1937, when the Reich Aviation Ministry wanted the Ju 88 to have rear defensive armament, but this could not be achieved due to the central tail unit of this type, Junkers in Dessau decided on the parallel design of the Ju 85 , which was roughly the same as the Ju 88 90% identical parts. The main difference between these two types was the double tail unit of the Ju 85

Ju 85 A

The Ju 88 V3 served as the starting model for this variant. The double tail unit was integrated without any further changes and a 7.92 mm MG was installed as a B-stand. The Ju 85 A was not pursued any further after the dummies were built, as the defensive armament appeared to be insufficient.

Ju 85 B

The Ju 85 A was further modified and equipped with a fully glazed combat head similar to that of the Ju 188 . 4 MG 7.92 mm were installed in this combat head. After the dummy was built in 1939, however, the type was abandoned because the low air resistance of the central tail unit of the Ju 88 was now preferred again

Two Jumo 211 A / B engines were planned.
