Juozas Gruodis

Juozas Gruodis (born December 20, 1884 in Rokėnai near Dusetos , Zarasai Rajongemeinde , † April 16, 1948 in Kaunas ) was a Lithuanian composer and music teacher.

Life

Gruodis was an organist in the provinces before studying at the Moscow Conservatory from 1915 to 1916 and from 1920 to 1924 with Paul Graener at the Leipzig Conservatory . After his return he was the conductor of the National Opera from 1924 to 1927. He founded the Kaunas Conservatory, the first university-level music school in Lithuania, where he worked as a rector and composition teacher. One of his students was Julius Juzeliūnas .

Following on from Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis , his compositions combined folk Lithuanian music with the modern - late romantic - currents of his time. He composed a. a. two symphonic poems , two orchestral suites , a string quartet , two piano sonatas , songs , a ballet , drama music and folk song arrangements .

The Kaunas Conservatory was named after his name .
