Justin Rice Whiting

Justin Rice Whiting (born February 18, 1847 in Bath , Steuben County , New York , †  January 31, 1903 in St. Clair , Michigan ) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1895 he represented the state of Michigan in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1849, Justin Whiting came to St. Clair, Michigan with his parents, where he attended public schools. In 1863 and 1865 he studied at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor . Afterwards he worked in the trade and in trade. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1879 he was elected Mayor of St. Clair; in 1882 he was a member of the Michigan Senate .

In the congressional elections of 1886 Whiting was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Michigan , where he succeeded Ezra C. Carleton on March 4, 1887 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1895 . After he left the House of Representatives, Whiting returned to his previous activities. In 1898 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of governor of Michigan: with a 39.9 percent share of the vote, he was defeated by incumbent Hazen S. Pingree . Two years later, an attempt to return to Congress also failed. Justin Whiting was also at times chairman of the Democratic Party in Michigan. He died on January 31, 1903 in St. Clair, where he was also buried.
