The Mittersteig prison is a special institution of the Austrian penal system in the 5th Viennese district Margareten . In the Mittersteig Prison, predominantly inmates of the execution of measures against sane, mentally abnormal lawbreakers (§ 21 Abs. 2 StGB ) are accommodated. Inconsiderable, mentally abnormal lawbreakers, on the other hand, are imprisoned in the Göllersdorf prison.

As of August 30, 2007, there were 152 people in custody in the prison, including one detainee on remand . This meant that the prison was exactly 100% full. Organizationally, the prison also has a branch in Floridsdorf , which is the largest branch in Austria. Up to 95 lawbreakers can be accommodated in the prison building itself, and 57 in its branch office.

history

The Mittersteig prison building was built from 1908 to 1910 in the so-called “ historical home style ” and initially served as the seat of the Margareten District Court and its prison. It was not until 1963 that the prison was reopened as a special Mittersteig facility after renovation work, and since the reform of the Prison Act in 1975 it has served as the central facility for accommodating sane, mentally abnormal lawbreakers.

The Floridsdorf branch, which was originally designed as a court prison, has been in operation in the Hermann-Bahr- Strasse federal building complex since 1997 . In January 2002 the Central Documentation and Coordination Office for Sex Offenders (BEST) and, since 2012, the "Clearing Office" were set up in this branch . This institution is responsible throughout Austria for the execution of prison sentences and measures against sex offenders and creates and coordinates the execution plans of the individual inmates.
