Justus van Egmont (* 1602 in Leiden ; † January 8, 1674 in Antwerp ) was a Dutch-Flemish painter .

Life

Justus van Egmont was born in Leiden in 1602. From 1615 he worked in Caspar van den Hoecke's studio in Antwerp , later came to Peter Paul Rubens and helped him with the execution of his works.

In 1628 he is registered as a master with the appendix "bei Rubens". In the same year he left Antwerp and went to Paris , where he became court painter to King Louis XIII. and XIV. was. In 1648 he was one of the first twelve members of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, founded in the same year . Around 1660 he returned to Antwerp, where he died on January 8, 1674.

Works

Egmont was mainly a portrait painter and adhered entirely to Rubens' style. But he did not achieve its vitality. Its coloring is smoother, its handling more petty.
