The kingdom of the Dagomba is located in the northern part of what is now Ghana .

The kingdom existed as a sovereign state for almost 500 years: from 1409 to approx. 1899. In 1899 it was subjected to British (see under Gold Coast (Colony) ) or German (see under German Colony of Togo ) colonial rule. This late colonization had u. a. To do with the fact that the Dagomba empire was in a disputed area between the British and the Germans, the so-called Salaga area . From 1744 to the middle of the 19th century, Dagomba was also tributary to the Ashanti Kingdom .

The traditions of the Dagomba kingdom are still alive today. As the Dagbon Traditional Kingdom , the Dagomba Kingdom is officially recognized and forms a parallel structure to the institutions of modern Ghana. The ruler of this kingdom is the Ya Na , whose court and administration is located in the city of Yendi . The Kingdom of Dagomba has traditional administrative responsibilities for various acephalic ethnic groups in its territory; H. for those ethnic groups who do not know any institutionalized rule, but are led by persons of respect or make their decisions by consensus. These are the Konkomba , the Bimoba, the Chakosi , the Basaari, the Chamba and the Zantasi. These ethnic minorities have a say in the Kingdom, but often feel discriminated against, which led to bloody riots in the 1990s ( see here ).

The three peoples Mossi , Mamprusi and Dagomba established great empires in what is now Burkina Faso and Northern Ghana in the 14th and 15th centuries, which are often grouped together under the name Mossi states due to their cultural affinity and similar structures . In addition to the Dagomba kingdom , these are the kingdoms of Yatenga , Ouagadougou , Gulmu and the Mamprusi kingdom .
