Kai Degenhardt (* 1964 ) is a German musician. His father is the songwriter Franz Josef Degenhardt , who died in 2011 ; his brother Jan Degenhardt also works as a singer-songwriter.

Live and act

Kai Degenhardt has been arranging his father's songs since 1987 and accompanying him on guitar during his studio recordings and live concerts. Since then, his guitar playing has had a major impact on the Degenhardt sound .

In 1997 he published his first own CD, Bread and Cake , and Dekoholic followed in 2000 . While he can only be heard on these two CDs with his own guitar accompaniment, he recorded the songs on his third CD Briefe aus der Ebene (2003) with a larger band. Musically, melodically and lyrically, with this CD he has further emancipated himself from the music of his father and found his own sound.

Further out it appeared in autumn 2008. The jury of the best song list selected it as CD of the month for November 2008, the Association Prize of German Record Critics rated it as one of the artistically outstanding new releases on the sound carrier market and recognized it by being included in the best list 4/2008. His fifth album, Closer than they seem , was released in spring 2012. Musically, large parts of this album are based on sound samples - from garbage can lids to cat pussies and impact wrenches. From the various snippets of everyday noise sampled with an mp3 recorder, Degenhardt tinkered the beats on the computer for most of the pieces on the album, which again made the CD of the month of May 2012 in the best songs list and in the best list 3/2012 of the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik eV was chosen.

In September 2018, the sixth album will be released on other routes . Stylistically multifaceted and instrumented with electrically amplified and classical guitars, drums, a jazzy double bass, piano, violin, trumpet and horn, Degenhardt presents eleven new, political-literary songs of the more demanding kind. They became CD of the month on the best songs list in September 2018 elected.

In addition to music, Kai Degenhardt wrote articles for the communist weekly UZ and other left-wing publications for some time . A selection of these essays was published by Neue Impulse Verlag in spring 2008 under the title Roll over Song & Dance . He also runs a record label called plattenbau .

Kai Degenhardt lives and works in Hamburg .
