The former Kaiserliche Oberpostdirektion is a building in the old town of Koblenz . In the building built around 1905 for the Koblenz Oberpostdirektion, the Rhineland-Palatinate State Mobility Office is now housed. Despite major changes over time, the listed building complex is an example of the requirements of the Prussian state buildings at the turn of the century from 1900.

history

A Oberpostdirektion in Koblenz was set up on January 1, 1850 in the Prussian Rhine Province and existed until January 1, 1995, until the Deutsche Bundespost was dissolved . The building on Clemensplatz, which still exists today, was built for them after 1881 .

After the Prussian city fortifications were abandoned in 1890, two large rings were built in place of the ramparts, the Kaiserin-Augusta-Ring (today Moselring) and the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring (today Friedrich-Ebert-Ring). For the Oberpostdirektion Koblenz a new representative building was built by the Reichspostamt according to their own plans as part of the southern city expansion 1905-1907 at the eastern end of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring , as the old building on Clemensplatz no longer offered enough space for expansion. To the left of the new building, the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Realgymnasium was completed at the same time .

During the air raids on Koblenz in World War II , the Imperial Post Office Directorate was damaged, but the damage was repaired as early as 1948. The risalit with the pillar porch on Friedrich-Ebert-Ring was greatly simplified before 1960. The Mittelrheinische Postmuseum found a new home in the building of the Oberpostdirektion in 1962. When the Oberpostdirektion closed, the exhibits were handed over to the Museum for Communication in Frankfurt.

The building complex was renovated and rebuilt in 1983–1986. A postmodern gable was built above the risalits on Friedrich-Ebert-Ring . At the same time, the interior of the building was completely gutted .

construction

The building of the former Imperial Post Office Directorate is an extensive and voluminous building complex. The three-wing, four-storey administrative building is on Friedrich-Ebert-Ring between the junctions of Casinostrasse and Friedrichstrasse. The building has a central residence on either side of Friedrich-Ebert-Ring and Casinostraße.

The facade is clad with sandstone and shell limestone blocks and decorated in German late Gothic forms . The windows in the facades are different for each storey and are simplified towards the top. At the corner of the street crossing, an octagonal stair tower with a curved hood is built, which towers above the building and which largely determines the silhouette of the Friedrich-Ebert-Ring. The top floor of the tower has a tracery gallery with two large coats of arms. On the one hand they show the western areas of the Kingdom of Prussia and on the other hand the coat of arms of the Rhine province and its most important cities. Inside the tower there is a stone staircase that ends under a star vault . The coats of arms of the cities of Andernach , Bad Kreuznach , Boppard , Mayen , Neuwied , Oberwesel and Trarbach are attached to the risalit in Casinostraße .

The facade facing Friedrichstrasse is simpler. The coats of arms of Koblenz and the Rhine Province are located on a two-storey bay window. Next to it is a smaller round stair tower that does not reach over the eaves .

Monument protection

The former Imperial Post Office Directorate is a protected cultural monument under the Monument Protection Act (DSchG) and entered in the list of monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . It is located in Koblenz-Altstadt at Friedrich-Ebert-Ring 14-20 .

The former Imperial Upper Post Office has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley since 2002 .
