The Imperial Place is a central place in the district town of Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia . The square is surrounded by Wilhelmstrasse and Zehnthofstrasse . It is connected to the market on the southeast corner .

history

The Kaiserplatz was originally called the cattle market. The meat hall has been at the cattle market since ancient times. In 1610, the Reformed received permission to set up a prayer house on the upper floor of this hall . On July 12, 1649, they purchased the building and built a new small church , the Preachhouse , which they owned until 1844.

The former monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I on Kaiserplatz

In 1886 the city leased the square for 99 years and erected a monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I. The monument was inaugurated on March 22, 1891 and completely destroyed in the air raid on November 16, 1944 . The cattle market was renamed Kaiserplatz by resolution of the city council on May 7, 1889. On December 22nd, 1892, the Evangelical Congregation in Düren donated the square to the city.

The Düren town hall

At the beginning of 1959 the new town hall was opened on the north side of the square , in which the Düren city administration is still located today. The building has been a listed building since 1986 . The Memento memorial, created by the sculptor Adolf Wamper , has stood next to the stairs to the town hall since 1962 ; the "Flame Angel" commemorates the destruction of the city in 1944.

The open space served as a parking lot for a long time. A redesign took place in the 1990s.

Todays use

The lanes on Kaiserplatz are closed to through traffic. Here is a central bus stop in the city, where numerous lines of the Düren circular railway stop. Markets such as the Christmas market and concerts, for example during carnival and jazz days, take place on the square.
