The Kalbachtunnel (also: Kalbacher Tunnel ) is a 1298 m long railway tunnel on the high-speed line Hanover – Würzburg , south of Fulda . It is located on the territory of the East Hessian municipality of Kalbach and therefore bears its name.

The construction costs according to the settlement (excluding VAT) amounted to 31.7 million D-Marks (around 16.2 million euros ; price as of 1985).

The tunnel runs in a north-south direction. The route runs in a tunnel largely a right curve of 6,000 m radius to which a northern district transition curve connecting. The gradient rises continuously towards the south portal with 12.5 per thousand.

At the north portal (building km 231.282) the upper edge of the rail is at a height of 346.758  m above sea level. NN , at the south portal (construction km 232.850) of 362.984 m. The overburden ( mountain ridge ) is up to 57 m.

The tunnel cuts through layers of the middle red sandstone and tertiary sediments .

history

planning

Together with a 140 m long pre-cut in the north and a 122 m pre-cut in the south, the tunnel formed lot 2 of a 2,875 m long construction section (construction km 229.810 to 232.685). The section was advertised in August 1982 and subscribed on September 21 of the same year . On November 12, 1982, the building contract was awarded for a total of 57,254,000 D-Marks (around 27.3 million euros ; price as of 1982).

In the planning and construction phase, the tunnel was also referred to as Object 81 .

construction

The construction of the tunnel was awarded at the end of 1982. The written order confirmation was sent on March 1, 1983.

Construction began on March 1, 1983 at the northern pre-cut. Driving from the north portal in a southerly direction began on May 5th of the same year. The tunnel was officially opened in August 1983. The planned length was 1,260 m.

The dome was knocked through on April 30, 1984 , the bench on May 14, 1985. Construction work was completed on December 27, 1985. The tunnel sponsorship had Ilse Mueller accepted.

The 1298 m long tube (the distance between the two portal base points was measured) was almost completely built using mining techniques over a length of 1263.0 m. 35 m in the area of ​​the portal structures were built using the open construction method.

The excavated cross-section was between 108 and 141 m², the usable cross-section between 81 and 99 m². The maximum excavation height (base - apex ) was 11.60 m, the tunnel height ( upper edge of the rail - apex) was 7.78 m. A total of 149,150 m³ of rock was excavated and 160,100 m³ of material was removed for the pre-cuts. The surplus masses were, together with those of Hartberg tunnel , at the landfill Roppesgraben at low Kalbach stored. No tunnel water was produced during the construction phase .

8,300 m³ of shotcrete was used for the outer vault, and 24,670 m³ of concrete was used for the inner and base vault . A total of 208 t of steel was used to reinforce the inner shell and the portals.

The ARGE Hartberg- und Kalbachtunnel , which consisted of six companies, was commissioned with the construction .

outlook

The application variant for the new Gelnhausen – Fulda line is to merge into the high-speed line immediately south of the tunnel.
