This Petersburg Rajon has 504,641 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). It is named after the Soviet politician Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin and has existed since 1936 through the division of the former, centrally located, historical city area of Vyborg Side into 3 parts. The other two that emerged were the Zhdanovsky and Vyborg Rajon .
