Kalkscheunenstrasse and Johannisstrasse

The Kalkscheune is a listed building at Johannisstraße 2 in Berlin 's Mitte district ( Mitte district ) next to the Friedrichstadtpalast .

history

The name of the building goes back to a barn in Kalkscheunenstraße in the 19th century for storing building lime .

The historic building complex was first mentioned in a Berlin fire insurance policy in 1831. Johann Caspar Hummel, one of the pioneers of the industrial revolution in Berlin, built the first Berlin machine factory here in 1804. The factory hall was later the seat of the first Prussian bicycle manufacturer, inaugurated by Queen Augusta . During the Second World War , the machine hall was hit by a bomb and the burned-out top floor was demolished. After the war, the building was expropriated without compensation in 1953. Fire extinguishers were installed in the hall of the former machine factory. From the attic of the corner building, the Stasi overheard conversations by foreign delegations who were staying in the GDR government's guest house opposite , the Johannishof.

The building complex has been rented to business customers since 1995 and used for meetings, congresses, conferences, parties and cultural events.
