Kaltenberg knight tournament
The Kaltenberg knight tournament , launched by Luitpold Prince of Bavaria in 1980, is a historicizing medieval knight stunt show on the grounds of Kaltenberg Castle in the Upper Bavarian district of Landsberg am Lech , about ten kilometers northwest of Lake Ammersee . The castle was built from 1292. Before and after the knight tournament , a supporting program with musicians, dancers, jugglers, storytellers, “witches”, court jesters and the like will take place in the arena and on the open-air stages around the castle. The tournament, which takes place on three weekends in July, is performed by a professional stunt troupe (Cascadeurs Associés until 2004, Cavalcade from 2005). The French stunt troupe “Cavalcade”, led by Mario Luraschi, is used in film productions around the world with their stunt horses.
The arena show is embedded in an annually changing framework, in which the fight “good against bad” is usually discussed. A short preliminary program gets you in the mood for the tournament. All participating artist groups will be presented in a festive entry and Luitpold von Bayern will open the tournament with a personal greeting to the visitors.
history
In 1976 Luitpold von Bayern took over the Königlich Bayerische Bierbrauerei in Kaltenberg. During a stay in London he came across a historical battle spectacle in the moat of the Towers of London , in which medieval battles were staged. He then asked Max Diamond, the British stuntman involved, whether he could organize a knight tournament on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the Wittelsbach dynasty in 1980. On June 15, 1980, the first Kaltenberg knight tournament was held in Kaltenberg with 16 English knights. In the second year of the Kaltenberg knight tournament, a marketplace was added as an extension. The Neuburg City Guard, a fanfare procession and seven members of the “Münchner Maibaumräuber” association were also integrated into the program. In the third year of the event, a grandstand was built and the juggler program expanded. Due to the inconsistent weather and the high risk of injury, the infrastructure has been improved since 1985. The municipal administration financed a fortified competition facility. By digging up a meadow slope, a 70 meter long and 30 meter wide arena with almost 10,000 seats and 3,000 standing places was created. The number of event days was increased from six to nine. The first evening event was on the program in 1988.
In 2017 the Kaltenberg knight tournament was awarded the Live Entertainment Award as Show of the Year.
