Kaltennordheimer marriage market
The Kaltennordheim marriage market is a folk festival in southern Thuringia with tens of thousands of visitors every year.
It lasts five days and takes place every year from the Friday before Pentecost to the Tuesday after.
history
The Kaltennordheimer marriage market has been held annually at Whitsun since 1563. Originally the marriage market was a cattle and farmers market , which developed into a folk festival in the 19th century. This is where the residents of the city and the surrounding villages met and got to know each other. It was not uncommon for this to result in a marriage, which explains the name.
market
The market takes place in the squares, streets and lanes of the city and also on the fairground instead of "In der Aue".
In addition to the showmen with their rides, carousels , lottery and shooting booths, there are over 140 market traders in the city who offer goods from a wide variety of areas.
In addition to the hype, there is also a whole range of sporting events on the Kaltennordheim park sports ground. Furthermore, there are several music events at different locations every day.
Getting married in the market
Getting married is still possible today on the marriage market. After the wedding, the wedding party usually goes through the market to the marquee, where the mayor and the district mayor usually give a short speech and convey the city's best wishes.
In 2015, the mayor married Erik Thürmer during the marriage market, which was accompanied by MDR television and broadcast on the program “MDR vor Ort”.
