Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara GCMG , KBE (born May 6, 1920 in Vanua Balavu , † April 18, 2004 in Suva ), a native of Kamisese Kapaiwai Tuimacilai Mara , is regarded as the founder of modern Fiji .

He was chief minister, the forerunner of the prime minister in Fiji from 1967 until independence in 1970, and apart from a short break in 1987, prime minister from 1970 to 1992. He was then president of Fiji from 1993 to 2000. "Ratu" is the Fijian name for one Chief.

In 1969, Mara was promoted to Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire , after having been appointed Officer of the Order in 1961. In 1983 he was appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George . He was also Chancellor of the University of the South Pacific , which he helped found.

Mara was an avid cricketer and played, among other things, in two first class matches against New Zealand teams.
