The Canary dock ( Rumex lunaria , German also moon muffler , Canarian Vinagrera or on El Hierro Calcosa ) is a species of the genus dock ( Rumex ) and belongs to the knotweed family (Polygonaceae).
description
The evergreen shrub reaches heights of between 100 and 300 centimeters. The fleshy, deep green leaves are stalked and arranged alternately. Their shape is broadly ovate to heart-shaped, and they are often wider than long. The leaf margin is entire.
The fruits are 5 to 9 millimeters long and have reddish-brown, rounded blades that are heart-shaped at the base. They only have one callus .
Flowering time is from December to May.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.
Occurrence
The Canary Dock grows endemically in the Canary Islands , in Italy it is naturalized in places. The species prefers rocks and scree as a location, but also ruderal spots .
