tasks
The canton archeology is responsible for around 2500 known archaeological sites in the canton of Aargau . It records and maps them in a database. Whenever possible, these archaeological monuments should be preserved and protected. If it is not possible to protect them, for example in the case of soil encroachments such as construction projects, the canton archeology carries out a rescue excavation . It documents the findings and hides and archives the findings . These are inventoried, restored and properly stored. The cantonal archeology coordinates scientific evaluations and publishes the results in specialist publications. In addition, the cantonal archeology communicates its findings to the public with guided tours, exhibitions, videos and other publications.
history
At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, private associations and societies were involved in archeology in the canton of Aargau . The Pro Vindonissa Society and the Historical Association Seetal and Surroundings and the Fricktalisch-Badische Association for Local Lore , which also carried out excavations , were particularly active . Archeology was institutionalized in 1943, when the then President of the Historical Association Seetal, Reinhold Bosch , was initially appointed as the first canton archaeologist in a part-time position. The Cantonal Archeology of Aargau is the first Cantonal Archeology to be founded in German-speaking Switzerland. From the initial one-man operation, a specialist department with several employees emerged in the 1970s.
