Karen Jane Allen (* 5. October 1951 in Carrollton , Illinois ) is an American actress .

Life and accomplishments

Karen Allen's father, Carroll Thompson Allen , was an employee of the Federal Bureau of Investigation ; her mother Patricia Howell a teacher. The family moved several times before settling down in the Washington, DC metropolitan area . Allen studied art and design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City , George Washington University, and the University of Maryland . She was of the plays of Jerzy Grotowski enthusiastic.

In 1973, Allen got her first role in the play Saint , which was produced by St. Columba Church . She later played in the Washington Theater Laboratory Company . In 1977 she moved to New York, where she first took acting lessons from Lee Strasberg , co-founder of the Group Theater and Actors Studio .

Career

In 1978, Allen made her film debut in the comedy I think Animal House (OT: Animal House ) alongside John Belushi . For this role she was paid $ 3,000. A year later she played a small role in the romantic comedy Manhattan by director Woody Allen and a supporting role in the feature film The Wanderers by Philip Kaufman . She played her first leading role in the drama Among Good Friends from 1980. The 1980s are considered the high point of her acting career.

She became known to a broad cinema audience in 1981 on the side of Harrison Ford in Steven Spielberg 's first Indiana Jones film Raiders of the Lost Ark and received the Saturn Award for best actress in 1982 .

In 1982, Allen was in the play The Monday After the Miracle her debut on Broadway and won the following year the Theater World Award as best new actress ( Best New Actress ).

For the role of Jenny Hayden in the adventure film Starman (1984) she received a nomination for best actress ( Saturn Award ) in 1985 . In 1987 Allen starred in the drama The Glass Menagerie , directed by Paul Newman . In addition to the good reviews, the film also brought her several nominations (in 1988 for the Independent Spirit Award and Sant Jordi Award ).

By 1990 she starred in five other films (including the romantic film Love Without a Way Out and the fantasy film The Ghosts I Called ). Since the birth of her first child, she only took on minor TV roles (including Rapture from 1993).

In 2008, after 27 years, she resumed her role in Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull .

Private life

In 1987 she met the American TV star Kale Browne at " The Whole Theater " in Montclair (New Jersey) , whom she married on May 1, 1988. The marriage lasted until 1997. On September 14, 1990, their first child, Nicholas Allen , was born. In the 1990s, Allen founded her own yoga center, where she and other teachers taught 35 classes a week. In 2003 she started her own textile company in western Massachusetts called Karen Allen Fiber Arts . She also gives acting classes at Simon's Rock College in Great Barrington.
