Ziani initially completed his training at the local RC Paris . At the age of 16, he agreed with the then second division club ES Troyes AC on a change in its youth department. Three years later he signed his first professional contract with the northern French, who had meanwhile achieved promotion to Ligue 1 . After settling in during his first professional season, he managed to gain a permanent place at Troyes. Both the relegation of his club to Ligue 2 in 2003 and the loss of his leadership role in the team a season later, however, increased his dissatisfaction. For this reason, he was loaned out to league rivals FC Lorient in January 2005 and ultimately also committed. With the Bretons he succeeded through his strong performances to receive the award "Best player of Ligue 2 2005/06" and thus to attract the attention of numerous Ligue 1 clubs. Although he was promoted to Ligue 1 with FC Lorient during the same season, he moved to FC Sochaux in the summer of 2006 . The now 24-year-old became a key player in Alain Perrin's team and secured the Coupe de France 2007 with his teammates by winning on penalties against Olympique Marseille. After this most successful season so far for Karim Ziani, he moved to the traditional club Olympique Marseille for a transfer fee of eight million euros. This move enables him to play his first UEFA Champions League games. While Ziani initially had problems establishing himself at Marseille, he was used more often in his second year. In 2009 he was also runner-up with the club.

On July 7, 2009, the German champions VfL Wolfsburg announced the commitment of Ziani, who received a contract there until 2013. In the first season he was still used regularly in the first half of the season and also gave two assists, in the second half he was only substituted on once. When it became apparent in his second year that he could not establish himself in the team, he was loaned to the Turkish first division club Kayserispor in January 2011 .

On July 8, 2011, VfL Wolfsburg announced that the contract with Ziani had been terminated by mutual agreement. Ziani then moved to the Qatari first division club al-Jaish , where he was also appointed captain by coach Péricles Chamusca . He stayed until 2013 before joining league rivals al-Arabi Doha . In 2014 he moved to the United Arab Emirates .

From the summer of 2015 to the beginning of 2016, Ziani was without a club for six months before the Romanian first division team Petrolul Ploieşti signed him . With Petrolul he had to relegate at the end of the 2015/16 season . He then joined US Orléans in the French Ligue 2 today and ended his active career there in the summer of 2019.

National team

Karim Ziani was born in Sèvres, France, but comes from an Algerian family. He decided to play for the Algerian national team, where he made his debut against Belgium on February 12, 2003 at the age of 20. Since then he has been one of the stars of this team and was therefore voted the best player in Algeria in 2004, 2005 and 2006. He also took part in the Africa Cup of Nations 2004 with Algeria and reached the quarter-finals together with his teammates.
