Karin Anne-Sofie Söder (birth name Bergenfur ) (* the thirtieth November 1928 in Kil ; † 19th December 2015 in Täby ) was a Swedish politician of the Center Party (Centerpartiet) , which was the first female chairman and only Secretary of their party.

biography

Karin Söder worked as a teacher after graduating . In 1971 she was elected deputy chairman and in 1979 first deputy chairwoman of the Centerpartiet and held this office until 1986. Between 1971 and 1991 she was a member of the Reichstag .

As the Center Party after the parliamentary elections in 1976 together with the Moderate Party (samlingspartiet Moderata) and the Liberal People's Party (Folkpartiet liberal nutrition) a coalition government with the chairman of the Center Party Thor Fälldin as Prime Minister was received, it was even for October 8, 1976 , Foreign Minister appointed and held held this post until the collapse of the coalition on October 18, 1978.

Afterwards she was deputy parliamentary group leader in the Reichstag, before she became Minister for Health, Social Affairs and Nordic Cooperation in the second and third governments of Thorbjörn Fälldin between 1979 and 1982 . In this function, she caused a stir with her puritanical decision to close the liquor stores , which are under a state monopoly , on Saturdays.

After the defeat of the coalition in the Reichstag elections on September 19, 1982 , she was again deputy parliamentary group leader from 1982 to 1986. During this time, between January 1 and December 31, 1984, she was not only President of the Nordic Council , but from 1984 to 1986 also chaired the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Reichstag.

In 1986 Karin Söder succeeded Thorbjörn Fälldin as chairwoman of the Centerpartiet, but handed over the office to Olof Johansson in 1987 .

Most recently she was again President of the Nordic Council between January 1 and December 31, 1989.

Karin Söder was married to Gunnar Söder, a former director general , and became the mother of the diplomat Annika Söder , who was Social Democratic State Secretary for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs between 2002 and 2006 .
