Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier

Karl-Josef Gilles worked at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier from 1978 to 2015 , initially as a research assistant. In 1986 he became curator and in 1989 chief curator for Roman provincial archeology and archeology of the early Middle Ages . In this capacity he was the head of excavations in numerous excavations in the Trier administrative district .

One of the main focuses of his work as an archaeologist was researching the evidence of Roman wine culture in the Moselle region . He discovered twelve ancient Roman wine presses , with which the evidence of Roman viticulture on the Moselle was made. That is why he was also referred to as wine press pope among colleagues and in the regional press . In addition, Gilles researched and published on regional history and numismatics of the city and the Archdiocese of Trier . An exception in archaeological circles was his good network with private collectors and probe users . The cooperation was fruitful for both sides, and one of the finders informed Gilles about the Trier gold coin treasure found by amateurs in 1993 the night after it was found.

Research and Teaching

Gilles has been a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute since 1987 . In 1990 he was given a teaching position in ancient history at the University of Trier . He wrote a large number of publications on Trier's coin history and has played a major role in the scientific processing of the Trier gold coin treasure since 1993, which was completed in 2013 with his publication of finds. It is thanks to him that almost all of the coin finds are now in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier. Gilles had also been a deputy of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate in the Numismatic Commission of the States in the Federal Republic of Germany since 1992 .
