Karl-Ludwig Kunz (born September 16, 1947 in Saarbrücken ) is a German - Swiss legal scholar and criminologist .

Life

Kunz studied law , philosophy and sociology at the University of Saarland , where he received his doctorate in law in 1976. During his work as a judge (1977–1984) , he completed his habilitation in 1983 at Saarland University. From 1984 until his retirement in 2013 he was a full professor for criminal law , criminology , legal philosophy , legal theory and legal sociology at the University of Bern . Among other things, he was the founding president of the Bern Forum for Criminal Science, President of the Academic Management of the School of Criminology, International Criminal Law and Psychology of Law and the Bern Graduate School for Criminal Law. He declined appointments to other universities in Germany and Switzerland and to the post of attorney general in Saarland . Since his retirement he has been an expert / consultant for various governmental, supranational and non-governmental organizations.

Kunz was visiting professor at the University of British Columbia ( Canada ), the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University (Canada), at Kansai University , Osaka ( Japan ), and at the China University of Political Science and Law , Beijing ( China ). He is an honorary member of the Japanese Society for Criminal Law and is a member of the Advisory Board of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law . The University of Białystok awarded him its medal in 2010 for his contributions to global research in criminal law and criminology and for his support for international academic cooperation. In 2012 he was a Senior Fellow at the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald .
