Karl Bartos (2005)

Karl Bartos (* 31 May 1952 in Marktschellenberg as Karlheinz Bartos ) is a German musician, DJ , music producer , songwriter and former member of the band Kraftwerk (1975 to 1991).

Life

Karl Bartos (2005)

Bartos first played in the Anthony String Group and together with Bodo Staiger and Marius Müller-Westernhagen for Sinus . From 1970 to 1976 he studied piano , vibraphone and drums at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf in Düsseldorf . A lecturer put Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider in contact , who were looking for a drummer for Kraftwerk's live performances . Bartos became a band member in 1975 and was co-composer of several titles from 1978 until his retirement in 1991, including Tour de France , The Model and The Telephone Call . The latter is the only band title for which Bartos contributed the vocals; both for the 1986 album version of Electric Café and for the remixes released a year later (7 "and 12" singles).

While working on The Mix , Bartos left the band in 1991 and began working with the former Rheingold musician Lothar Manteuffel under the project name Elektric Music . In 1993 the only album Esperanto was released . The collaboration ended the following year.

From 1994 he worked with Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr on the second album of the Electronic Raise the Pressure project . Bartos has also worked as a producer, songwriter or remixer for various international artists such as OMD , Anthony Rother , Flatz and Deine Lakaien . Clearly shaped by the collaboration with Electronic, a solo album was released in 1998 under the new name Electric Music . Both the name change and the style of music clearly differed from the style of the previous project. Unlike Esperanto , an album clearly influenced by Kraftwerk, this release was shaped by his work with Sumner and Marr. It's guitar pop with echoes of the Beatles . The album and singles were not very successful.

It wasn't until 2003 that an album under his own name was released for the first time with Communication . In the following years Bartos went on tour and participated in festivals.

Since the summer semester of 2004, Bartos has been teaching auditive media design in the Sound Studies course as a visiting professor at the University of the Arts in Berlin . In the same year, he took part in the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival with the music video I'm the Message , where he was also part of the jury.

In 2013 his album Off The Record was released , with which he also goes on tour in Berlin and Copenhagen, among other places. It entered the German album charts at number 44 and was described as "the best Kraftwerk record in 30 years" in the predominantly positive reviews.

“While Hütter manages the band's legacy with his rightly celebrated appearances in museums such as the Tate Gallery, Bartos draws a bridge into the modern age. And in some moments he is closer to the great, groundbreaking albums of discography than he himself might want to admit. "

On August 25, 2017, the Eichborn Verlag published the autobiography of Karl Bartos with the title The Sound of the Machine .
