Karl Fruchtmann

Karl Fruchtmann (born December 10, 1915 in Meuselwitz ; † June 10, 2003 in Bremen ) was a German director , author and filmmaker .

Life

Karl Fruchtmann was born into a Polish-Jewish family. He grew up with four siblings in the small town of Meuselwitz in Thuringia. In 1936 he and his brother Max were deported to the Sachsenburg concentration camp near Chemnitz. Karl Fruchtmann later came to the Dachau concentration camp , from where he was released again in 1937 with the assurance that he would leave Germany immediately. In the same year he emigrated to Palestine . He spent some time in London and New York in the 1950s. In 1958 he returned to Germany and learned the cinematic craft at Westdeutscher Rundfunk (television). He directed for the first time in 1962; In 1963 he began working with Radio Bremen , where he often shot with the cameraman Günther Wedekind . He also worked as a director in theaters.

In 1991 he was awarded the Culture and Peace Prize of the Villa Ichon in Bremen .

He was with the Canadian painter Janet, b. Clothier, married. His older brother was the writer Benno Fruchtmann .

His written estate is in the archive of the Academy of Arts in Berlin.
