Karl Gottlieb Bretschneider (born February 11, 1776 in Gersdorf in the Erzgebirge, † January 22, 1848 in Gotha ) was a German Protestant theologian and an important representative of theological rationalism .

Life

Born as the son of pastor Johann Gottlieb Bretschneider and his wife Johanna Christina (née Küttner), he lost his parents at the age of 13. He was then raised by his uncle. In 1794 he enrolled at the University of Leipzig . Following his studies, he accepted a tutor in Oberwiera in 1797 and returned to Leipzig in 1802 in the same position . In 1804 he received his doctorate and habilitation at the University of Wittenberg , whereupon he held lectures on philosophy and theology as a private lecturer. Due to the troubled war times, he decided to pursue a career in the church and therefore refused an appointment at the University of Königsberg in 1809 . Instead he went to Schneeberg and Annaberg as a pastor . In 1816 he came to Gotha as general superintendent, where he was significantly active in literature until his death.

As a theologian, he represented the point of view of rational supranaturalism in his writings and, in addition to dogmatics , dealt with biblical philology. In terms of church politics, he fought the compulsion to commit to confession and thus took a position that was friendly to the Union. The publication of the works of Philipp Melanchthon in a Corpus Reformatorum inaugurated by him is regarded as the most important merit .

On July 19, 1808, Bretschneider was accepted into the Masonic lodge to the three drawing boards in Altenburg; In 1829 he joined the Ernst zum Compass Lodge in Gotha, to which he belonged until the end of his life.

His son was the lawyer and mathematician Carl Anton Bretschneider .
