Karl Hauptmann (born April 24, 1880 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † April 7, 1947 on the Herzogenhorn , Geschwend municipality ) was a German painter .

Live and act

He was born in Freiburg in 1880 as the son of a carpenter. After attending secondary school in his hometown, he completed training in Nuremberg and Munich. Hauptmann worked as a freelance painter in Freiburg from 1906, and he married in the same year. From 1915 to 1918 he did military service as a mountain hunter on skis. After his return, he bought the hut on the Herzogenhorn , built in 1913 above Grafenmatt , and named it “Molerhüsli”, which was both his home and studio.

Gravestone in the cemetery in Geschwend

His most important works are winter landscapes in the Black Forest . The pictures stand out above all for their idealizing, realistic depiction of the landscapes. Hauptmann died in 1947 in his “Molerhüsli”, which at that time belonged to the Geschwend community (now the city of Todtnau). He was buried in the Geschwend cemetery. When the simple community grave was leveled in the 1970s, the city decided to place the gravestone at the entrance to the cemetery as a memorial.

Arthur Hauptmann , best known as a castle researcher, was his son. The writer Gaby Hauptmann is his granddaughter.
