Karl Heinz Jahnke (born August 24, 1934 in Rostock ; † September 14, 2009 there ) was a German historian . From 1969 until his dismissal in 1991 because of “lack of need” he was a professor at the University of Rostock .

Life

In 1953 Jahnke passed the Abitur in Bad Doberan . From 1953 to 1957 he studied history and education at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald (EMA Greifswald), passed the state examination for high school teachers in 1957 and joined the SED . From 1957 to 1960 he had a scheduled scientific aspirant and received his doctorate in 1960 with a dissertation on "The history of the revolutionary workers' movement in Stralsund from its beginnings to the founding of the SED (1891-1946)" with Johannes Schildhauer . Subsequently, Jahnke became senior assistant at the Historical Institute of the EMA Greifswald and completed his habilitation in January 1966 on the "Participation of German youth in the anti-fascist resistance struggle with special consideration of the communist resistance movement 1933 to 1945". From September 1966, Jahnke worked in Greifswald as a lecturer for new and recent history.

In February 1969, Jahnke moved to Rostock University as a lecturer in the history of the German labor movement . There he was also secretary of the basic SED organization in the history section . From September 1973 he was full professor for the "History of the German Labor Movement" in Rostock and from 1980 to 1984 also director of the history section. In 1982 he received the National Prize of the GDR , 2nd class with the collective authors of the book History of the Free German Youth . With this publication he was completely in line with the ruling SED. From 1985 to 1989 he headed a research group on the history of the youth movement in Rostock . From 1983 to 1990 he was part of the editorial team of the magazine Contributions to the History of the German Labor Movement .

After Jahnke had received a professorship for modern German history in Rostock in 1990, he was dismissed in October 1991 due to "lack of need". In the summer of 1991 he was visiting professor at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf .

He then devoted himself increasingly to the history of National Socialism and the anti-fascist resistance as a freelancer and presented numerous, mostly biographical, writings. The aim was “to gain recognition for the 'forgotten' victims of the resistance and 'uncomfortable anti-fascists'”. Jahnke explained his biographical perspective: “I didn't want to trace large images of history or present guidelines for history. [...] Because the actual creators of the story, the living people, do not have enough space with this approach. ”He also paid attention to a“ unity of text and design ”according to the principle:“ If there are photos, there must be specific captions give. If there are people, it must be said who the people are. And if possible also the place and date. That wasn't common back then. "

After cancer was diagnosed in 2005, he began to organize his private archive in order to make the sources he had collected accessible for future research. In his last publication he dealt with the ups and downs of his biography. His memoirs and the printed documents are important contributions to the discussion about research on anti-fascist youth resistance and how to deal with GDR biographies.
