Karl Ludwig Nordmann (born September 11, 1778 in Schackenthal ; † February 8, 1848 in Kahnsdorf ) was a German domain tenant and animal breeder.

Life

Karl Ludwig Nordmann was born as the son of the leaseholder of the Schackenthal domain. His uncle Christian Gebhard Nordmann , who worked for his father as an administrator for five years, was later described as a pioneer in agriculture who was intensively involved in animal breeding.

Karl Ludwig Nordmann was initially trained by private tutors and later attended the newly established higher commercial and commercial school in Magdeburg . He received his subsequent training from his father. He then worked as an administrator and inspector on several large estates. After the death of his father in 1808 the lease and administration of the Schackenthal domain was transferred to him by the ducal government in Dessau and he was appointed senior bailiff.

He operated an important grain trade and had bought his own barges for this purpose, which carried the grain to Hamburg . From Hamburg the grain was loaded onto larger ships and shipped to England . Despite the wars of liberation at the time and the resulting restricted trade, he achieved great profits as a result.

In 1811 he took over the Mosigkau Abbey near Dessau, but ceded the estate to his brother as early as 1812 to take over the domain office of Hornburg near Halberstadt . Because of this office, he carried the title of a former royal Westphalian, later royal Prussian senior bailiff. On this estate, he devoted himself to improving arable farming as well as sheep and horse breeding, for which he had stallions and broodmares come from England. He made a name for himself with his model sheep farm as well as with the horse trade and also sold his animals to princes.

After the lease of the Hornburg domain had expired, he withdrew to the Plötz manor , which he had inherited from his father , and united the scattered farmsteads into one community.

He spent the last years of his life as a pensioner in Leipzig with his children. He died on the estate of his son, who was the heir, feudal lord and court lord in Kahnsdorf near Leipzig.
