Karl Nef

Karl Nef (born August 22, 1873 in  St. Gallen , † February 9, 1935 in Basel ) was a Swiss musicologist .

Life

Nef first studied cello  at the Leipzig Conservatory , but then turned to musicology under the influence of Hermann Kretzschmar . In 1896 his dissertation "The Collegia Musica in German Reformed Switzerland from its creation to the beginning of the nineteenth century. With an introduction to Reformed church chant and the cultivation of secular music in Switzerland in earlier times" was published in the Zollikofer'sche Buchdruckerei St Gallen. In 1897 he moved to Basel, where he initially worked as an editor for the Swiss music newspaper and as a music consultant for the Basler Nachrichten .

Over the years he built up the musicological institute at the University of Basel ; After his habilitation in 1900, Nef was appointed professor in 1909 and finally in 1923 as professor.

Nef died in 1935 at the age of 61. His successor as head of the institute was Jacques Handschin .
