Karl Otto Watzinger

Karl Otto Watzinger (born May 17, 1913 in Gießen ; † April 30, 2006 in Mannheim ) was a German administrative lawyer and associate mayor of Mannheim.

Life

Karl Otto Watzinger, son of the classical archaeologist Carl Watzinger , was born in Gießen, where his father was a professor, and grew up in Tübingen , where his father moved in 1916. After graduating from high school in 1931, he began to study law, first at the University of Tübingen , then in Berlin . In 1936 he finished his legal traineeship at the district court of Rottenburg am Neckar after passing the first state examination in law. From 1937 to 1939 he worked for the Chemical Industry Economic Group in Berlin. In 1939 he enrolled at the University of Göttingen one, but was in August 1939 for contacts with the banned Socialist Workers Party of Germany arrested in Switzerland. First he was in custody in Bruchsal , then in the penal prison in Ulm, in September 1941 in the Dachau concentration camp and in November 1944 in the SS criminal division Dirlewanger . After his release from Soviet captivity in September 1945, he was able to complete his legal clerkship with the assessor examination and in 1947 was awarded a doctorate at the University of Tübingen. jur. From 1949 to 1954 he was a legal advisor to the city of Ulm . In 1951 he joined the SPD . Since 1954 he was city counsel for Mannheim. From 1962 until his retirement in 1978 he was the mayor of Mannheim, responsible for personnel, legal, administrative and regulatory affairs.
