Karl Philipp Conz (born October 28, 1762 in Lorch , † June 20, 1827 in Tübingen ; other spellings Carl Conz, Carl Philipp Conz) was a German poet, writer and scholar. From (1804–1827) Karl Philipp Conz held the chair for Classical Philology at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen . Conz was a childhood friend of Friedrich Schiller .

Origin and family

Karl Philipp Conz comes from a family of theologians in Old Württemberg. His father Johann Philipp Conz, who died in 1767, was the clerk of the monastery at Lorch Monastery , he was married to Sophie Rosamunde, who died in 1802, a daughter of Johann Christoph Blifers (Plievers) , a citizen of Tübingen . Conz married Christine Dorothee, a daughter of the Württemberg historian, schoolmaster and prelate Johann Christian Volz (1721–1783). The couple had five children.

Youth and education

Conz grew up in Lorch, where he met the young Friedrich Schiller and soon became friends with him. He received his education in monastery schools in Blaubeuren and Bebenhausen before he started studying theology at the Tübingen monastery . There he became a repetiteur at the theological seminary in 1789. After undertaking a major educational tour through Germany, he was appointed preacher at the Karlsakademie in Stuttgart in 1790 and a deacon in Vaihingen (later in Ludwigsburg ) in 1793 .

Chair holder and author of several papers

In 1804 Conz was appointed professor of classical literature at the University of Tübingen . No major work can be identified among his writings, as he almost exclusively wrote smaller philological, aesthetic, philosophical and historical essays. He also wrote numerous poetic writings that often praised the history and landscape of Württemberg in a soulful way and in melodious verses . Conz translated Aeschylus , Aristophanes and other Greek poets. He died of dropsy in June 1827, still during his ordinariate in Tübingen .
