Karl Schütte (clarinetist)

Karl Schütte (born April 1, 1891 in Obernkirchen near Bückeburg , † February 11, 1977 in Dresden ) was a German clarinet virtuoso .

Life

Karl Schütte was born in 1891 as the son of the miner Karl Schütte (born 1863) and his wife Ernestine Warnecke in Obernkirchen near Bückeburg in the Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe . After primary school in his hometown, he attended the Schaumburg music school in Rinteln / Weser from 1905 to 1909 ; He also studied with Eduard Heyneck (clarinet) and Johannes Merkel (harmony and counterpoint) at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Leipzig .

In 1913/14 he worked at the Neue Oper and in 1914/15 at the Hamburg City Theater . From 1915 to 1918 he took part in the First World War. From 1918 to 1922 he was 1st clarinetist at the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra . He then moved to the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden , where he was principal clarinet from 1923 to 1964. There he was a member of the brass association. In 1924 he was also appointed to the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra .

He was also a teacher for clarinet and wind ensemble playing at the Dresden Orchestra School as well as a member of the Reich Association of German Tonkünstler and music teachers . At a young age, his students also included the future conductors Fritz Busch and Rolf Reuter .

Schütte, a Protestant, was married to Tilly Schuhmacher from 1923.
