Karl Weise (born November 19, 1813 in Halle (Saale) ; † March 31, 1888 in Freienwalde ) was a folk poet and master turner .

Life

Born and trained in Halle (Saale), Weise set out on a journey after completing his apprenticeship as a turner. He lived in Berlin from 1842 to 1848 , then in Freienwalde until his death. He had six children with his wife Christiane Charlotte Henriette Milde, whom he married here in 1854. In 1858 he became a member of the Association for German Rhyming , and a year later his first work, Flowers of the Woods, appeared . More and more he became known as a folk poet. Theodor Fontane visited him and both developed a friendship. In the hikes through the Mark Brandenburg , Fontane dedicated a separate chapter to him under the title Hans Sachs in Freienwalde . His growing popularity is also evident from the fact that Weise, whose stories and poems revolved around the craftsman's life, was supported by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV with an annual honorary gift of 50 thalers.

Honors

The Weisestrasse in Berlin was  named after him, as was the Karl Weise School (between Hermannstrasse and Schillerpromenade ). In his hometown Halle (Saale), two memorial plaques on the successor building of his birth house remind of the poet, the older one since 1911. Also in his main place of residence one commemorates the "Freienwalder Hans Sachs", as he was called because of his connection to the city. First, craftsmen erected a memorial for him four years after his death, and in 1979 the city also created one. There is also a street named after him here. After all, there are several memorial plaques in Bad Freienwalde that were created on the 100th anniversary of his death, for example in Gesundbrunnenstrasse or Königstrasse .
