Karl Wittich (born June 25, 1840 in Berlin , † November 1916 in Dresden ) was a German historian . His research focus was on the events and characters of the Thirty Years' War .

Life

Wittich appears in the title of his treatise on the origin of the Duchy of Lorraine , published in Göttingen in 1862, with the title of doctor . In 1870 he acquired the venia docendi at the University of Jena . From 1874 to 1877 he was an associate professor there. Later he lived in Dresden. In numerous archives he examined historical sources that had previously been ignored. One of the main interests was the question of who was responsible for the devastating city fire when Magdeburg was conquered in 1631 . As a Protestant, contrary to the prevailing Protestant historiography, he came to the conclusion that with all historically achievable probability Dietrich von Falkenberg was the organizer of the city fire that thwarted Tilly and Pappenheim's goals.

Wittich published several monographs , as well as the ADB articles on Gustav II Adolf of Sweden , Otto Ludwig von Salm-Kyrburg-Mörchingen , Gottfried Heinrich zu Pappenheim , Johann Friedrich Struensee , Tilly and Wallenstein .
