Karl von Miltitz (Nuncio)

Karl von Miltitz (* around 1490 in Rabenau or Scharfenberg , † November 20, 1529 in Steinheim ) was papal nuncio and negotiated with Martin Luther .

Life

ancestry

Miltitz belonged to the Saxon noble family Miltitz . His parents were Sigismund von Miltitz, governor of Meissen in Pirna, and his second wife, Klara von Schleinitz . His father's three marriages gave birth to 24 children.

Act

He became canon in Mainz , Trier and Meißen , in 1515 papal notary and chamberlain in Rome and was sent to Saxony in 1518 as papal nuncio to negotiate a standstill agreement with Luther and to dissuade Elector Frederick the Wise from continuing to protect Luther. In January 1519 he had a meeting with Luther in Altenburg , during which he made far-reaching promises, which he u. a. redeemed lessons on several articles from February 1519 with his writing . In October of the same year Miltitz met Luther in Liebenwerda and a year later in the Antoniterkloster Lichtenberg near Prettin , but the talks were unsuccessful. On a later trip he drowned in 1529 in the Main near Groß-Steinheim.
