Life

Perfall's father, the royal chamberlain Emanuel von Perfall auf Greifenberg , comes from the old Bavarian noble family Perfall . His mother Franziska Freiin von Rolshausen auf Türnich came from Cologne. Karl von Perfall received music lessons as a child. After the successful performance of his compositions for the artist's mask festival in 1849 in the Odeon , he decided to become a professional musician, although he would have been sure of a career in administration after an excellent legal exam. He became a student of Moritz Hauptmann , Leipzig Thomaskantor .

In 1851, Karl von Perfall married Julie von Reichert (1824–1874), the daughter of the court director Ignaz Ritter von Reichert. They had four children, including: Ludwig, later major general, Emanuel, later court marshal and personal adjutant of Prince Leopold of Bavaria and Julie, who later became the wife of the painter Otto Hierl-Deronco .

In 1852 Perfall was the conductor of the Münchner Gesangverein Liedertafel and composed songs, choral works, concert pieces and music for the artist mask festivals 1850–1852 and 1854. In 1853, his first opera, Sakuntala, was premiered in Munich. In 1854 he founded the Munich Oratorio Society, which he directed until 1864, and in 1855 he was appointed royal chamberlain.

From 1859 until his death he was a member of the Munich casual society .

In 1864 Karl von Perfall became director of the court music, in 1867 director of the royal Bavarian court theater and in 1872 general director

Director of the Bavarian Court Theater

With 742 performances of Richard Wagner's works , Karl von Perfall played a key role in his breakthrough. He was personally quite critical of Wagner. The fact that he encouraged him so intensely was not least due to his loyalty to King Ludwig II , but also to the recognition of Wagner's genius.

In 1870 the Theater am Gärtnerplatz was taken over . In 1881 Karl von Perfall organized the first Wagner festival . During Perfall's tenure, the world premieres of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde , Meistersinger von Nürnberg and the Ring des Nibelungen took place . In 1892 his resignation for the 25th anniversary as director of the royal court theater was rejected, in 1893 then partially approved, when Ernst von Possart was appointed general director of the court theater and Perfall was appointed general director of court music until the end of 1906 and director of the Academy of Music until the end of 1906 1901 stayed. After leaving these offices, he was appointed honorary president of both institutions. He died just two weeks after his last honor.

There are portraits of him that Franz von Lenbach painted in 1888 and 1899. In 1902 and 1904 his son-in-law Otto Hierl-Deronco painted him in tails and uniform as the first court batch.
