Karl von Viana (born May 29, 1421 , † September 23, 1461 ) was the son of John II of Aragón and Blanka of Navarre , daughter and heir to King Charles III.

Life

In 1423 Charles was made Prince of Viana . On September 30, 1439, he married in Olite Agnes von Kleve, daughter of Duke Adolf von Kleve and Maria von Burgund, and thus a niece of Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy . Agnes died on April 6, 1448, the marriage remained childless.

Both his grandfather Karl III. as well as his mother Blanka , who ruled Navarre from 1425 to 1441, had left the kingdom of Charles, who had also been recognized as an heir by the Cortes of Navarre. However, when Blanka died in 1441, Johann took over the government alone and at the same time excluded Karl from it. Tensions between Charles and his father grew when Johann married Juana Enríquez on April 1, 1444 , from whom he had a son, who later became King Aragón, Ferdinand the Catholic : for Juana, Charles was an obstacle.

When Juana Enríquez began to intervene in internal political affairs, a civil war broke out in 1451 , in which the Beaumonteses party to Charles and that of the Agramonteses to Charles' father John. Charles besieged Juana Enriquez in Estella , who hurried to help her husband. Despite the support of John II of Castile, Charles was defeated in the battle of Aibar in the autumn of 1451. He was imprisoned for almost two years and was only released on condition that he would not use the royal title before his father's death. He went to France, where he sought support for his cause in vain, and finally fled to Naples (1455) to the court of his uncle Alfonso V of Aragon . When Alfons died three years later, John became King of Aragón and Charles was offered the crown of Naples and Sicily , which he refused. After the prospect of a reconciliation with his father, he returned to Spain in 1459.

Charles went ashore in Barcelona and was cheered by the Catalans who intended to revolt against Charles' father John II. Then Charles asked King Henry IV of Castile for the hand of his half-sister, the later Queen of Castile, Isabella the Catholic , who, however, had already been chosen by John II to be the wife of his son Ferdinand the Catholic. When Johann II treacherously locked Karl in prison in Lerida, an uprising broke out in Catalonia that quickly spread to the point where Johann was forced to give in. He released Karl, recognized him as the heir of the kingdom and made him permanent governor of Catalonia. A short time later, on September 23, 1461, Charles died in Barcelona. Rumors emerged that he had been poisoned on behalf of his stepmother, which forced Juana Enríquez to flee to Girona , where she placed herself under the protection of the bishop.

In addition to his political ambitions, Karl von Viana was a culturally interested nobleman. He translated Aristotle 's ethics into Spanish (published in Zaragoza in 1509 ) and wrote a chronicle of the kings of Navarre, the Cronica de los reyes de Navarra, while in custody in 1452 .
